Source: AAOS Now, Published 8/1/2019
David R. Chandler, MD, MHL

The theme of the Florida Orthopaedic Society (FOS) Annual Scientific Meeting that took place June 20–23 was “Celebrate Diversity in Orthopaedics.” AAOS President Kristy L. Weber, MD, noted during her vice presidential address at the AAOS 2018 Annual Meeting that orthopaedics is the least diverse of all specialties. She said that the U.S. orthopaedic workforce has only 6.1 percent women and 4.8 percent underrepresented minorities. Furthermore, orthopaedic residencies are still the least diverse of all specialties, with only 12 percent to 15 percent females.

At the FOS meeting, incoming FOS President David R. Chandler, MD, MHL, reviewed the FOS mission, vision, and strategic goals. FOS President Brett R. Bolhofner, MD, and the FOS Board of Directors created the strategic goals in 2006, which included: (1) promoting the delivery of culturally competent care, and (2) supporting efforts to diversify the profession and the orthopaedic workforce.

In his 2018 FOS Presidential Acceptance Speech, Dr. Chandler charged FOS to address these strategic goals and embrace diversity by developing an inclusive, respectful culture that encourages participation in orthopaedics by all demographics.

The FOS Board accepted the diversity challenge, and during the Florida Medical Association 2018 Annual Meeting, FOS moved to begin a FOS Diversity Task Force ad hoc committee. The task force established a creative space to generate ideas FOS could enact to achieve its goal and promote culturally competent patient care.

The FOS Diversity Task Force enlisted several contributing members, including Sonya Ahmed, MD; Odion Binitie, MD; Lisa Cannada, MD (chairperson); Dr. Chandler; Sheila Conway, MD; Jennifer Hagen, MD; Jason Oberste, MD; Eddie Powell, MD; and Vani Sabesan, MD. The task force also included Randall Morgan, MD, who is a founding member of the J. Robert Gladden Society. Dr. Sabesan was a driver of the Diversity Task Force and the FOS Annual Meeting Program Committee chairperson. In those positions, Dr. Sabesan was focused the committee and designed the annual meeting to highlight the efforts of the Diversity Task Force.

FOS to Consider Bylaws Change During 2019 Annual Meeting

The Florida Orthopaedic Society Board of Directors will be proposing a Bylaws Amendment for membership consideration during the 2019 FOS Annual Meeting. The recommendation from the Board is to create a Diversity Committee as a Standing Committee of the organization.

FOS President, David Chandler, MD, appointed a Diversity Task Force last summer as he began his service as President. The initiative was designed to make sure the organization is addressing one of our stated strategic goals related to diversity. The Task Force has been actively addressing diversity within our membership and leadership over the past 10 months. In recognition of their progress and the positive response from the membership, the Board is recommending we amend the Bylaws to make the Diversity Committee a Standing Committee of the organization. If the amendment is approved by the membership, the Chair of the Diversity Committee will have a seat on the FOS Board of Directors. The Chair position is filled via appointment by the FOS President.

The proposed Bylaw Amendment language is as follows:

9. Diversity Committee

This committee shall consist of a Chair appointed by the President and additional members appointed at the discretion of the President. The Committee will be responsible for meeting the strategic goal of the organization in promoting diversity within the orthopaedic work force in Florida and within the membership and leadership structure of the organization.

If you have any questions or concerns related to this matter, please contact the FOS office. The membership will vote on this amendment on Sunday morning during the Business Meeting at the FOS Annual Meeting.

Thank you for your patience as we addressed the logistics for the BSOF Annual Meeting.

We have been in communication with the hotel, and whilst they have not suffered any damage, due to the inability of many attendees and speakers to travel, BSOF has decided to reschedule the 2017 Annual Meeting to a later date. We are currently working with the hotel to try and secure new dates. We will send you all details as soon as we have confirmation.

All hotel rooms booked at the Opal Sands will be canceled on your behalf if the hotel room was booked within the BSOF room block. The hotel has assured us there will be no financial penalties. If you booked your hotel room outside of the room block, you will need to call the hotel at (855) 335-1087. Again, no financial penalties will be incurred. If you want to confirm the cancellation or call the hotel for any other reason – please call (855) 335-1087.

If you decide you still want to spend the weekend at the Opal Sands Resort at Clearwater Beach, the Opal Sands will honor your reservation. We are creating a list of those attendees that want to keep their reservations. I just need to know by the end of the day if you plan to use your hotel room. If you do not let us know if you want to use your room, the hotel will automatically move forward and cancel it on your behalf.

If you booked a hotel room at our overflow hotel, Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, the same process will be utilized. All hotel rooms in our overflow block will be cancelled by the hotel. If you booked outside of the block, or for any other questions, please contact the hotel directly, 727-281-9536 or 727-281-9500.

If you booked anywhere else, please call your hotel directly and cancel your room reservation.

We will be in touch in the next few days with further information. We do anticipate that all registrations and fees will transfer to the new date. We will handle inquiries on your availability once the new dates and revised agenda are finalized and announced in the coming days.

Thanks and we hope you all made it through the storm without significant damage and stay safe during the recovery.

The Florida Orthopaedic Society was extremely pleased to have the opportunity to provide education for our members and all of the various stakeholders during the 2017 Workers Compensation Conference held in Orlando. The FOS has participated in the conference for a number of years as a means of providing awareness of advances in orthopaedic care and supporting reform and initiatives that will improve quality care rendered to injured workers in Florida.

View Photos

Some highlights of our involvement in this year's conference are included below.

7th Annual Florida Orthopaedic Society Injured Workers Inspiration (IWI) Awards

Dr. George Canizares, President of the FOS, had the privilege of announcing the winners
of our 7th Annual Injured Workers Inspiration Awards during the opening ceremony of
the WCI Conference. Hundreds were in attendance were present to witness the
announcement of the following winners: Jonathan Levy, M.D., from Holy Cross
Orthopedic Institute in Fort Lauderdale, FL and David Klein, M.D., from Kennedy
White Orthopedic Center in Sarasota, FL.

Orthopaedic Breakout Session

The 2017 Orthopaedic Breakout Session for Adjusters and Case Managers took place on
Monday afternoon, August 7th. The program was filled with timely updates on treatment
options for common orthopaedic injuries in the work place as well as some timely discussions on concussion diagnosis and treatment and pain management protocols. A very special thank you to all of our members that participated in the breakout session this year: Albert Volk, M.D.; Howard Routman, D.O.; David Gilbert, M.D.; Paul Dowdy, M.D.; and Thomas Phipps, M.D.

Florida Orthopaedic Society Educational Luncheon

Tuesday afternoon during the WCI Conference provides the FOS the opportunity to focus on
the needs of our members and administrators. For the past 6 years we have hosted a
luncheon and invited guest speakers to address regulatory and reimbursement issues for our
members and the injured workers you treat. We were extremely fortunate to have the
Chairman of the Florida House Insurance & Banking Committee, Representative Danny
Burgess, attend this year's luncheon. Chairman Burgess gave an enlightening overview of
the Workers Compensation Reform Legislation that the House of Representatives pursued
earlier this year. Chair Burgess was most interested in hearing from our members about our
ideas for meaningful reform as the Legislature prepares to address this issue again in 2018.
We also had the good fortune of hearing from Brittany O'Neil, PMP, ARM-P, WC Policy
Coordinator at the Division of Workers' Compensation, on the rules and policy changes that
the Division is pursuing. Finally, Manthan Bhatt, State Government Affairs Manager at the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, shared the resources that the AAOS has on a
federal level to assist State Orthopaedic Societies as we pursue statutory and regulatory
change on a state level.

This annual luncheon has become a can't miss opportunity for our members and your
staff to hear from key workers compensation officials. We hope you will consider joining us
next year.

The FOS also championed Resolution 16-306, which requires high schools operating athletic programs to invest a small amount of resources in protecting student athlete safety. Specifically the resolution calls upon public and private schools to have at least one certified and licensed athletic trainer on campus. Data was presented that the cost of a trainer is about $40,000 a year and that many schools across the state currently do not have adequate medical staff on campus for a majority of sporting competitions and practices. While recognizing the financial implications of the proposal, the FOS looks forward to working with our elected officials at a state and local level to prioritize student safety. The resolution received a significant amount support from the House of Delegates but ultimately it was Referred to the FMA Board of Governors for Action. That means the FOS will be participating in the October FMA Board Meeting seeking formal support of the resolution.

2016 Brings Record Breaking Annual Conference for FOS

The leadership of the Florida Orthopaedic Society would like to thank all of the volunteers, leaders, and members that contributed to the largest FOS Annual Meeting in recent history. A record number of members, residents, fellows, and medical students turned out to participate in an engaging and stimulating program. The momentum built by the Program Committee and Breakout Session Facilitators is certain to carry over to future years and signals continued growth in participation and membership in the Society. A very special thank you is owed to the Program Chair, Thomas Bernasek, MD, from the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa. His energy and commitment delivered an outstanding program that was enjoyed by all.

There were so many notable events and achievements during the conference, but we did want to highlight a few special moments.

Dr. Carlos Lavernia delivered an inspirational Presidential address covering a year of success and growth for him personally and the organization as a whole. Under his stewardship the society engaged a group of emerging leaders to take an active role in leading organized orthopaedics in Florida. We secured a significant increase in member participation both at a committee level as well as during the Annual Meeting. And Carlos led the charge as we addressed a number of critically important legislative issues in Tallahassee. Carlos reflected on his pride to serve as President of the FOS and the amazing opportunities that life in Florida has provided him and his family. The FOS is extremely grateful for his service to the organization.

Saturday brought the election of the 2016/2017 Florida Orthopaedic Society President, John Nordt, M.D. Dr. Nordt delivered an address full of compassion and encouragement for his peers to join in the efforts to defend the profession of orthopaedics from the external influences that threaten the sustainability of medical practice. Dr. Nordt has dedicated a number of years to representing his colleagues at the AAOS through the Board of Councilors and the Board of Directors of the FOS. His particular area of interest is reversing the medical economic trends that challenge patient care. John proposed a series of initiatives designed to investigate and pursue how the FOS can assist our members in succeeding at a personal and professional level.

This year's list of invited keynote speakers were a line up of world renowned surgeons, leaders in the profession, and health care professionals blazing a course for care delivery models in the future. Miguel E. Cabanela, MD, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, delivered a presentation on Why Hips Fail? James Andrews, MD, from the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, delivered a presentation on Preventing Injuries in Youth Sports. William Shaffer, MD, Medical Director of the AAOS, gave the latest overview on the Impact of Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Models (APMs). Finally, Early Results of Bundled Payment Programs was the focus of the lecture delivered by Jan Vest, Chief Executive Officer from Signature Medical Group in St. Louis.

Extending our educational reach to important members of the health care delivery team, the FOS hosted our first educational symposium for Orthopaedic Professionals. Kicking off this year's annual conference, the symposium featured speakers from around the state that tackled important issues such as concussion, bundled payments, reducing readmissions, outpatient total joints, and nutrition. A very special thank you to Andrew Wong, MD and Tammy King, PT, MHS, DPT for putting together an excellent program.

Later on Saturday, Residents from around the state took center stage as they participated in the OrthoBowl. The OrthoBowl continues to grow in size and stature as the competition has expanded in both format and participants with the new residency programs in the state. This year's competition featured the largest number of programs ever with representation from the University of Florida, University of Florida Shands Jacksonville, University of Miami, University of South Florida, Orlando Health, Larkin Hospital, and Largo Medical Center. Congratulations to this year's OrthoBowl Champions, Orlando Health, represented by Dr. Randy Lavender and Dr. Jason Stack.

Further highlighting the talent and research being conducted at training programs in the state, Sunday saw this year's edition of the Fellows and Residents Research Competition & OREF Residents Research Symposia, Presented by OREF, ORS, and the FOS. We received more entries to this competition in 2016 than ever before illustrating the continued growth and engagement of programs across Florida. We are very pleased to announce the winners in the competitions below:
